FREDERICTON (GNB) – Aquaculture and Fisheries Minister Rick Doucet recently met with a New Brunswick company developing innovative technology for the aquaculture and fisheries sectors.
Gas Infusion Systems displayed its latest technology in Halifax at the Aquatron Laboratory, Dalhousie University‘s aquatic research facility.
“Your government recognizes that investments in innovation are commitments to the long-term sustainability of our resources and our economy,” said Doucet. “The success of our seafood sector is thanks to the hard work, determination and innovation of the people behind it. We are working together to get things done so our aquaculture and fisheries sectors find new ways to thrive and continue to contribute to our economy and generate jobs.”
Through the Regional Development Corporation, the Department of Agriculture, Aquaculture and Fisheries committed $24,000 to the development and construction of a prototype oxygen infusion unit for use in well-boats, which are used to transport live fish. The unit has several other applications in the commercial fishery to further improve the health and quality of landed resources.
Gas Infusion Systems, which is based in Saint Andrews, specializes in mass gas transfer using a patented technology. The company is focused on infusing oxygen into both marine and freshwater environments in order to improve the health and welfare of aquatic organisms.
“We are thankful to the Government of New Brunswick for supporting the development of innovative applied technology to benefit the aquaculture and fisheries sectors and our aquatic environment,” said company president Michael Beattie. “This testing is a key step on the road to manufacturing this technology for use in our industry.”
The system previewed by Doucet was designed by Gas Infusion Systems chemists in collaboration with engineers from Stantec.
