MISCOU (GNB) – The provincial and federal governments today announced a repayable contribution of just over $1 million to Miscou Fish Products Inc. and the Canadian Crab Packers Associates Ltd. for new equipment and technology to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of its processing operations.

The new equipment was required after a fire on May 25, 2017 destroyed the seafood processing facilities of Miscou Fish Products on Miscou Island. The company decided to rebuild the plant, acquire state-of-the-art processing equipment and implement innovative processes to meet the highest quality standards to help meet market demand for seafood products.

“This project will bring back jobs that were lost due to the fire and contribute to the economic development of the area,” said Agriculture, Mines and Rural Affairs Minister Wilfred Roussel. “This is good news for the people of Miscou and surrounding areas. We are proud to partner with our federal counterparts to ensure that New Brunswick seafood is always first in quality and value. "

Roussel spoke on behalf of Aquaculture and Fisheries Minister Rick Doucet.

“We are pleased to announce this funding for Miscou Products today,” said Acadie-Bathurst MP Serge Cormier. “It will help to create jobs in our area and to create economic growth in the future. That is what our government promised early on, and we are proud to deliver on that promise. The Atlantic Fisheries Fund is there to help companies like Miscou Products, which produces quality seafood products, to buy state-of-the-art equipment and develop new technologies and processes.”

Cormier attended for federal Fisheries, Oceans and Canadian Coast Guard Minister Jonathan Wilkinson.

The contribution derives from the Atlantic Fisheries Fund, a $461 million federal-provincial program which is focused on increasing market value for sustainably sourced, high-quality fish and seafood products from Atlantic Canada.

The fund is in its first year and will continue to invest in fisheries and aquaculture projects over the next seven years. Projects will support all aspects of the fish and seafood sectors and will focus on innovation, infrastructure and science partnerships.
