Overview
The Provincial Fish Health Laboratory provides diagnostic testing and screening for the different disease agents affecting aquatic animals.

Description
Current surveillance and screening programs aid the Government and Private veterinarians in determining the health status of not only a single farm but also the industry as a whole. Specimens submitted to the Fish Health Laboratory include live and moribund specimens of primarily Atlantic salmon but may also include Trout (all species), Arctic Charr, Lobster, Haddock, Flounder, Mussels, Oysters, and various other native species.
The Provincial Fish Health Laboratory located in St. George, New Brunswick performs numerous testing protocols such as Necropsy, Bacteriology, Parisitology, Immunofluorescent antibody staining (IFAT) and Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) testing for various disease causing organisms. Also available is the HPLC analyzer that can be used to detect chemical and drug residues in fish tissue.
The Fish Health Laboratory in St. George is currently certified as a Level 2 containment facility.
The Fish Health Laboratory also utilizes private laboratories such as the Research and Productivity Council in Fredericton or the Atlantic Veterinary College in PEI for confirmation testing, as well as diagnostic testing that is currently not performed at the Provincial Laboratory.
The laboratory operates Monday to Friday 8:15 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. excluding statutory holidays under the direction of the Provincial Aquaculture Veterinarian located in the St George office.
