FREDERICTON (CNB) - A donation of $2,500 to the Fredericton Native Friendship Centre was announced today by Rick Brewer, minister responsible for the aboriginal affairs secretariat.

Each year, the centre provides assistance to Aboriginal families who are new to the Fredericton region. It provides a variety of information for newcomers, including contacts for education, employment/training and social programs.

"I realize how difficult it must to arrive in a region where you don't know where to start to get the basic necessities for you and your family," Brewer said. "This is precisely why the centre is so important, and I am tremendously pleased that our government can provide support for the great work it does every year."

The grant was provided by the secretariat's grants program, which provides small grants to individuals, First Nations communities and Aboriginal organizations for a variety of events, projects and initiatives to help improve the government's relationship with the communities and organizations.

More information on the grants program, including criteria and the application form, may be found online.
