MONCTON (GNB) – The provincial government will invest $1.5 million in experiential education opportunities for Indigenous university students over the next three years.

Post-Secondary Education Minister Roger Melanson, who is also the minister responsible for aboriginal affairs, made the announcement in Moncton to a group of Indigenous leaders as part of a roundtable on economic development.

“Your government recognizes the particular importance of experiential learning for Indigenous youth,” said Melanson. “We heard today that Indigenous people learn by doing, and this funding will support students in conventional academic settings access more hands-on learning opportunities while increasing their access to the workforce.”

This funding is part of the $18.4 million, three-year commitment to experiential education announced last week.

Department officials and the universities’ Indigenous co-ordinators will meet on Thursday, June 28, to begin establishing a framework for the three-year plan.
