FREDERICTON (CNB) – Spring weight restrictions for trucks will be lifted from all New Brunswick highways at midnight Sunday, May 15, a week earlier than anticipated in northern New Brunswick.

Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Claude Williams announced the removal today.

"After careful review, we have determined that spring weight restrictions can come off on the same day in both southern and northern New Brunswick, bringing us in line with our counterparts in Nova Scotia and Quebec," said Williams.

The weight restrictions are intended to protect highways from damage during the spring thaw by reducing allowable weights. These restrictions are determined by Department of Transportation district engineers and staff who inspect roads and monitor conditions.

"I want to remind industry that there could be some roads that may still have travel restrictions because of the effects of heavy rains or flooding," said Williams. "District engineers have the authority to close roads or post weight limits at any time to protect the province's 18,600 km of roads."

More information on routes affected by weight or travel restrictions is available on the department website.
