FREDERICTON (CNB) – The Grand Manan V ferry will be back in service by next week, Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Claude Williams announced today.

"Work on the Grand Manan V is being finalized and going through necessary inspections before the ferry can be approved to set sail back to New Brunswick," said Williams. "The vessel will leave the shipyard at about 4 a.m. (Atlantic time) on Saturday, June 18, according to the latest information we have received."

If the current schedule is maintained, the ship will return to service on Tuesday, June 21.

"Significant damage was sustained to the ship, and in order to return it to the optimal level of service, the shipyard needed to undertake considerable repairs," said Williams. "The timeline for return to service is determined by the shipyard, and by their requirements as they complete those repairs and the inspection process.”

The ferry is being repaired at the Groupe Maritime Verreault dry dock in Les Méchins, Que.

On May 18, the ship lost its steering capabilities and became moored on a ledge about 20 metres from the wharf in Blacks Harbour.
