FREDERICTON (CNB) – A modular bridge will replace the Stormdale Covered Bridge that was destroyed by fire earlier this summer, Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Claude Williams announced today.

Located near Hartland, the bridge was destroyed on Aug. 13 after a stolen vehicle was parked on the bridge and set on fire.

Williams visited the site today to make the announcement.

"Plans are being put in place for construction to begin this month," said Williams. "The modular bridge is faster to assemble than a typical concrete bridge which means the people of this area should be able to cross the new bridge by the end of the year."

The cost is estimated at $450,000. The modular bridge will be one lane wide, without a height restriction, and be able to support heavy loads of up to 43.5 t. The covered bridge had a span of 29 m and width of 4.75 m, and had a load restriction of 12 t with a 3.90 m height restriction.

Residents of the area currently have a detour of up to 14.5 km.
