SAINT JOHN (CNB) – The westbound lanes on the Harbour Bridge have reopened, but traffic will still be restricted to two lanes until the end of the year.

"We have reopened the westbound lanes, but traffic on the bridge will still be reduced to two lanes at the former toll section of the bridge," said Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Claude Williams. "This will allow work to continue on the traffic flow re-design."

The westbound on-ramp (known as ramp A) will reopen later this week. The eastbound Chesley Drive off-ramp (known as ramp B) is scheduled to open toward the end of the month. Work at the former toll booth section is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

"I thank the people of Saint John for their patience during this lane closure," said Williams. "We are asking drivers for their continued co-operation as workers will be working close to traffic on the site of the former toll booths for the next two months."

The new traffic flow design includes traffic-calming measures such as a raised curb between the two eastbound lanes; a concrete barrier; and speed measurement signs that show motorists their speed, similar to those present in many school zones.

The eastbound lanes will close next spring to allow for work on a barrier wall replacement; expansion joint replacement; deck drain replacement; deck slab and concrete repairs; and resurfacing. All work is scheduled to be completed by the fall of 2012.
