MIRAMICHI (GNB) – A New Brunswick company has won a multi-million-dollar contract to carry out a major upgrade on the Centennial Bridge at Miramichi.

MQM Quality Manufacturing Ltd. of Tracadie-Sheila submitted a winning bid of $13,021,500.  Four bids were received.

"Construction is expected to begin in early July on this important piece of infrastructure," said Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Claude Williams. "The Centennial Bridge has served the region for many years and will now undergo needed repairs. It is good to see New Brunswick companies successfully competing for a major contract that brings work and economic activity to local communities."

The tender was issued April 27 and closed May 31.

The bridge is 45-years-old and requires maintenance and upgrading. The work comprises structural steel repairs and upgrades required to bring the bridge to current standards and will include painting of the southern approach spans and the main truss and deck truss spans. The project will be carried out over three years.

Overweight permits have been restricted on Centennial Bridge until the repairs are made.

Over the next several months, scheduled bridge closures will occur. Travellers can expect single-lane closures during the day and full closures of the bridge at night. Detours will be posted as required. One lane of the off-ramp for Church Street on the south end of the bridge will also be closed for 28 days this summer.

No closures will take place on the bridge during the Miramichi Irish Festival.
