FREDERICTON (GNB) – A new francophone school for children in kindergarten through Grade 8 will be built in Fredericton on the city's north side near the intersection of Noble Street and Eco Terra Drive.

Education and Early Childhood Development Minister Jody Carr made the announcement today.

Carr was joined by school officials, parents, elected officials from greater Fredericton and community representatives at the site.

“I am delighted to be at this stage of a project that is so important to the students, parents, and school staff, as well as to the entire francophone community of the Greater Fredericton area,” Carr said. “In addition to meeting the growing need for space for students and staff, this new school will provide a positive, safe, inclusive, and dynamic learning environment.”

The school will have a capacity of 570 students and will be built on an about nine hectares (22.7 acres) of property.

“This is a time of great celebration for francophones in the Fredericton area, because this new school will satisfy the growing needs of our families,” said Human Resources Minister Troy Lifford. “I extend my most sincere thanks to all our partners who have helped to make this project a reality.”

Lifford attended the announcement on behalf of Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Claude Williams.

In addition to 30 classrooms for kindergarten to Grade 8, the school will have a library, a science laboratory, a cafeteria, music and art rooms, multipurpose rooms, space for student services and two gymnasiums. The school will also have an outdoor playground and a sports field.

The project design and architectural work is planned to start in September. The school is slated for completion in September 2015.
