SAINT-LOUIS-DE-KENT (GNB) – Construction is underway on a new nursing home in the Saint-Louis-de-Kent area.

The tender to construct Villa Maria, which will replace the current nursing home, has been awarded to Acadian Construction (1991) Ltd. of Dieppe.

“I am pleased that this contract has been awarded and the project is proceeding,” said Social Development Minister Madeleine Dubé. “Before long, the residents and staff will have a new, secure facility that will enhance their quality of life in their home community.”

The replacement facility will have 60 beds and will cost an estimated $14.5 million, which is significantly lower than the original project estimate of $21.9 million announced under the 2009 nursing home plan.

“A new Villa Maria will benefit the residents and their families, staff and the community as a whole,” said Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Claude Williams. “It will offer modern accommodations and new equipment to help improve service delivery, while also stimulating economic activity during the construction period.”

Construction began in June and the project is scheduled to be completed in the fall of 2014.

The Villa Maria project is part of the provincial government's 2011-16 Nursing Home Renovation and Replacement Plan, under which 354 nursing home beds and 704 specialized care beds are being created.
