TABUSINTAC (GNB) – The new Tabusintac Community School officially opened today.

Premier David Alward announced the name of the facility at an event also attended by Education and Early Childhood Development Minister Marie-Claude Blais; Natural Resources Minister Paul Robichaud; Miramichi Bay-Neguac MLA Serge Robichaud, who attended on behalf of Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Claude Williams; Miramichi MP Tilly O'Neill Gordon; and local officials.

“The construction of this new school is an example of our government's commitment to invest in education as part of our ongoing work to rebuild New Brunswick,” Alward said. “Strong schools like Tabusintac Community School play a vital role in preparing our young people for post-secondary education, success in the workforce and contributing to our province's future growth and prosperity.”

“Tabusintac Community School is a wonderful addition to this community and to our education system,” said Blais. “This new school will enhance the quality of life for people in Tabusintac for many years to come. It provides a safe, healthy environment in which children can learn and grow on their journey to reaching their full potential.”

Paul Robichaud said the new school and community centre will make the community more attractive to new residents.

"Investing in community infrastructure projects such as Tabusintac Community School is an investment in our future as a province," Robichaud said.  "The community centre will be a valued part of life in the Tabusintac area, and this investment will improve the quality of life for families and residents."

The one-storey, 1,526-square-metre school accommodates 44 students. It features three classrooms, four resource rooms (half-classrooms), washrooms, change rooms, a lounge for staff and a gymnasium, and will include a playground. It also has a community centre, cafeteria, kitchen and a multi-purpose room.

"Our government is a leader in promoting our communities across the country," said O'Neill Gordon. "We have contributed to this project in order to support quality government services in the region."

The community component of the building was built with a contribution of $700,000 from the Regional Development Corporation, $250,000 from the Department of Environment and Local Government, $200,000 from the federal government and $100,000 from the community.

“As a government, we recognize the importance of revitalizing key infrastructure such as schools for the benefit of people and communities in all regions,” said Serge Robichaud. “I commend and thank the people of Tabusintac and the federal government for their support for this project.  It is a great example of how we are rebuilding New Brunswick together for greater success as a stronger province.”

The construction of the school, located on the site of the former Tabusintac facility, began in late 2012 and is the result of a total investment of $3.6 million.
