BATHURST (GNB) – A new intensive care unit at the Chaleur Regional Hospital in Bathurst officially opened Jan. 31. It will admit its first patients on Thursday, Feb. 6.

"Our government is committed to rebuilding our health-care system so that all services are sustainable, safe and of the highest quality,” said Health Minister Hugh Flemming. “This includes strategic investments in our infrastructure. The intensive care unit at the Chaleur Regional Hospital was in need of an upgrade to meet current standards. Starting this week, the region's most seriously ill patients will be cared for in a state-of-the-art facility with new equipment."

The unit, which covers 1,431 square metres (15,900 square feet), can accommodate 10 intensive care patients as well as five step-down patients. It represents an investment of $13.4 million.

"This strategic infrastructure project confirms our government's strong commitment to provide New Brunswickers with access to quality health-care services," said Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Claude Williams. "The unit will be more spacious for patients and staff. It will be equipped with cutting-edge technology and will meet modern health-care standards. These improvements represent a significant investment for the Chaleur Regional Hospital."

Stéphane Legacy, chief operating officer, Acadie-Bathurst Zone, Vitalité Health Network, welcomed the completion of the project.

"The facilities are ultramodern, with more spacious patient rooms and dedicated observation stations,” he said. “This unit is an important addition to the delivery of critical care for patients in the region.”

The Chaleur Regional Hospital Foundation announced an investment of $353,194 to acquire vital sign monitors for the unit.

“The foundation remains interested in discussing various partnerships to improve the care and services offered to our population,” said Jean-Guy Robichaud, board chair of the foundation. “The Chaleur Regional Hospital plays a crucial role, which our community confirms year after year by contributing to the success of our funding campaigns."
