MONCTON (GNB) – The construction of a $9.2 million facility at the Moncton Hospital will be completed in August to provide additional space for a new oncology clinic.

“Once this new oncology clinic is up and running this fall, it will provide better quality care to patients by being more accessible, appropriate and with adequate space for care,” said Health Minister Hugh Flemming. “This initiative, made possible through a partnership with the Friends of the Moncton Hospital Foundation, supports our vision of a sustainable, patient-centered health-care system.”

The project, totalling 1,530 sq. metres (17,000 sq. feet), consists of the construction of a single wing to the hospital. The former vacant laboratory and X-ray wings were demolished and an additional 40 parking spaces have been created.

“I am pleased to see this important construction project will be completed this summer,” said Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Claude Williams. “The new space will allow the hospital to accommodate more patients, while also offering them greater privacy. Both patient service delivery and the work environment for hospital staff will be improved.”

Design work is also underway for other renovations to an additional 225 sq. metres (2,500 sq. feet) in a location adjoining the new oncology department to provide office space for several clinical research employees plus an area for document storage. This additional renovation work is estimated at $300,000.

“We are happy that this spacious and beautiful new facility for the oncology clinic at the Moncton Hospital is so near to completion,” said Paul Arsenault, chair of the Friends of the Moncton Hospital Foundation. “We will soon be able to demonstrate to our donors that the funds given by so many generous and caring people are being used to fulfill the vision for which they were given - to help those living with cancer by providing the space they need to heal.”

The 2014-15 capital budget includes $3.4 million to complete the construction project. The Friends of the Moncton Hospital Foundation is providing $6 million.

The architect for the project is Guy LeBlanc Architect Ltd. of Moncton. The general contractor is Bird Construction Ltd. of Saint John.
