STANLEY (GNB) – A new $2.1 million health centre is under construction in the Village of Stanley.

“The Stanley Health Centre provides excellent primary health care services including blood collection, immunizations, chronic disease management and childhood screening and immunization clinics,” said Health Minister Hugh Flemming. “Built in 1976, it is the oldest health centre in province. Replacing this aging infrastructure will ensure that the people of Stanley continue to receive quality health care in their community.”

The project consists of a single-storey, 662.4 square metre (7,130 square feet) building constructed on the same property as the Nashwaak Villa Nursing Home which opened in July, 2013. The new health centre will include a day procedures room, treatment room, a nurse assessment area, five examination rooms, two physician offices, nurse practitioner and nurse manager offices, a multi-purpose room, space for public health, extra-mural and dietician services, speech language pathology, meeting room and administration area. Construction begins this summer and will be completed by January, 2015.

“The new health centre will provide additional space and modern surroundings to better meet the needs of the community and staff,” said York North MLA Kirk MacDonald, who attended for Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Claude Williams. “It will be an important resource that contributes to the health, economic and social well-being of area residents. Nursing home residents will continue to benefit from the close proximity of the new facility. This is important for our aging population.”

Simpson Building Contractors Ltd. of Fredericton has been awarded a $1.6 million contract to build the centre. The architect is Goguen Architecture Inc. of Fredericton. The Nashwaak Villa Nursing Home is leasing a three-acre parcel of land to the province for $1 per year. Work on the new centre began in mid-June.

“The physicians and staff will continue to offer their services from the new facility,” said Horizon Health Network vice-president of community Jean Daigle. “Our goal remains the same, to respond to the health needs of our community with an enhanced emphasis on chronic disease prevention.”
