MIRAMICHI (GNB) – About $1.2 million will be spent in Miramichi under the Municipal Designated Highway Program as the provincial government invests in infrastructure that supports the economy and employment.

A stretch of Route 117, also known as Wellington Street, will be reconstructed from Knox Street to Water Street.

“The provincial government is pleased to partner with the City of Miramichi to make these necessary improvements on Route 117,” said Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Bill Fraser. “Our government recognizes how important it is to have a safe and efficient transportation system to promote quality of life, trade and travel, as well as economic activity in our province. Today’s joint investment will help to stimulate the local economy as our government creates jobs and moves New Brunswick forward.”

The tender for the project will be awarded by the city during a special council meeting on Thursday, July 21. The work should begin in August.

“We are pleased with the efforts of the city and the provincial government that has resulted in this project moving forward,” said Billy Fleiger, city councillor. “This stretch of roadway has been on the city’s radar for some time and we appreciate the provincial government’s co-operation and assistance on this file.”

Under the Municipal Designated Highway Program, municipalities apply to the provincial government for funding assistance for capital upgrades. The province provides $25 million in funding each year for priority projects.
