WOODSTOCK (GNB) – The provincial government will fund curb and gutter replacements on a stretch of Connell Street in Woodstock this year under the Municipal Designated Highway Program.

“New Brunswick communities deserve strong partnerships with the provincial government in maintaining and upgrading their infrastructure,” said Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Bill Fraser. “Strategic investments in communities like Woodstock keep the economy moving forward.”

The work will extend nearly one kilometre, from St. James Street to Green Street. The government is paying 75 per cent of the project’s cost, with the remainder paid by the Town of Woodstock.

“Our government understands the importance of investing in communities,” said Fraser. “We are listening to our municipal partners and we are getting things done for New Brunswickers.”

Under the program, municipalities apply for funding assistance for capital upgrade projects. The government received more than $210-million in funding requests through the program in 2016.

“We are pleased to work with our provincial partners on this important infrastructure project,” said Woodstock Mayor Art Slipp. “Projects like the replacement of curbs and gutters help stimulate growth and development in the community.”

The province’s $775.6-million capital budget, which includes the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure’s capital budget of $638.5 million, reflects the government’s priority to support its buildings, highways and bridges.

Funding for the Municipal Designated Highway Program has more than doubled since the 2014-15 fiscal year, increasing to $25 million in 2015. It has remained at that level as part of a government commitment to sustain funding for municipalities.

Strategic investments in infrastructure are a key component of the New Brunswick Economic Growth Plan, the government’s framework for growing the economy and creating jobs.
