GAGETOWN (GNB) – The provincial government will invest about $8.5 million in paving, grading and chip seal projects in the Gagetown and Petitcodiac regions this year.
“Your government recognizes the importance in investing in rural roads,” said Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Bill Fraser. “Safe and reliable roads are the fuel that keeps our economy moving forward.”
The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure will pave two sections of Route 10, including a five-kilometre section from the McLean Mill Bridge to the Queens County line and a 4.3-kilometre section between Route 870 and 880. Paving is also planned on 6.2 kilometres of Route 102 between the Gagetown village limit and Queenstown Wharf Road and seven kilometres of Route 112 between Montgomery Brook and Keenan Road.
Chip seal will be applied to sections of Blakney Road, Killam Road, Steeves Settlement Road, Route 124, Route 880, Pleasant Ridge Branch Road, Pleasant Ridge Road, Salem Road, Whites Mountain Road, Route 695, Cherry Hill Road, Cox Point Road, Cumberland Point Road, Hovey Road and Starkey Road.
Grading work will take place on Route 885 at the Route 890 intersection.
In the village of Cambridge-Narrows, the provincial government will fund the application of a second seal of 6.5 kilometres of the Lower Cambridge Road through the Municipal Designated Highway Program, in which municipalities apply for funding assistance for capital upgrade projects.
Funding for the program has more than doubled since the 2014-15 fiscal year, increasing to $25 million in 2015. It has remained at that level as part of a government commitment to sustain funding for municipalities.
The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure’s $688.2-million capital budget reflects the government’s priority of investing strategically in its buildings, highways and bridges. Strategic investments in infrastructure are a key component of the multi-year New Brunswick Economic Growth Plan, the government’s framework for growing the economy and creating jobs.
