GRAND MANAN (GNB) – The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure is partnering with Coastal Transport Ltd. to provide ferry service to and from Grand Manan on New Year’s Day.

“We understand that many people travel to visit friends and family during the holiday season and may need to travel between Grand Manan and the mainland on New Year’s Day,” said Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Bill Oliver. “Our government believes our ferry system is important to our province, and we are pleased to offer this service for the first time.”

The pilot project follows a request from the Village of Grand Manan.

‘’The Village of Grand Manan is very pleased with the government’s decision to give us a trip on New Year’s Day,” said Mayor Dennis Greene.

The ferry will depart Grand Manan at 11:30 a.m. on Jan. 1, and will depart Blacks Harbour at 1:30 p.m. This run will help to determine the demand for such a trip in future years.

The provincial government owns 13 ferries. Eight river ferries are managed by the department, and five coastal ferries are managed through a public-private partnership with Coastal Transport Ltd.
