DARLINGS ISLAND (GNB) – The redeveloped Darlings Island Road was officially opened today in a ceremony involving the provincial government and the community of Darlings Island.

“We know that the road is often affected when water levels rise during the spring freshet; that is why we were so proud to announce that it would be realigned and raised during the 2019 construction season,” said Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Bill Oliver. “Now, residents will be able to come and go as they please, without having to worry about rising waters in the spring.”

In July, the provincial government announced that the height of the road would be raised to match the elevation of the bridge, which is about six metres above sea level. This resulted in some parts of the road being raised over two metres. The new alignment is about one kilometre in length.

The road is critical for residents as it is the only way in or out of the community.
