Overview
This department is responsible for the licensing and monitoring of early learning and childcare facilities in the province. The Minister of this department is provided with the authority to represent the public interest for the safety and healthy development of young children, up to age 12, who are in non-parental early learning and childcare arrangements. The department licenses, renews, monitors and investigates early learning and childcare facilities, as defined under the Early Childhood Services Act.
Eligibility
The Early Childhood Services Act sets out the approval and renewal requirements for early learning and childcare centres and early learning and childcare homes. Maximum early learning and childcare centres size is 60 spaces. Early learning and childcare homes must not exceed 6 children of a combination of ages or where solely school age children are cared for no more than 9 children. Both facility types include the children of the operator up to age 12.
Description
Detailed information packages outlining the licensing requirements are available from one of the department’s regional offices. Prior to operating and annually thereafter, individuals who intend to provide early learning and childcare services must submit an application to the department. All licensed facilities are inspected annually. Depending on the facility’s compliance history, monitoring frequency may range from a minimum of 1 to 3 additional visits per year. The associated functions are delegated to regional Early Learning and Childcare Licensing Staff located in the department’s 4 regions.
