FREDERICTON (GNB) – New Brunswickers are encouraged to be aware of ways to reduce, reuse and recycle during Waste Reduction Week, taking place Oct. 20-26 throughout Canada.

Environment and Local Government Minister Brian Kenny said that everyone can play a part in making more environmentally-conscious choices.

“This is good time to celebrate our success and explore where we can reduce the amount of waste we produce,” Kenny said, “Every day, each New Brunswicker can make a difference in preserving our resources and protecting the environment.”

“Since 1988, the amount of waste being disposed in our landfills each year has gone from 860 kg per person down to 612 kg per person in New Brunswick,” he said. “That is real progress. I encourage everyone to continue with more environmentally-friendly habits for our future generation.”

Solid waste is managed by 12 regional service commissions, working closely with the Department of Environment and Local Government.

The department also works closely with Recycle NB through its Extended Producer Responsibility initiative to recycle tires, used paint, oil and Glycol (coolant), to divert them away from the waste stream.

Individuals are encouraged to identify locations where they can recycle these products in their area and to try to continue to reduce the amount of waste they produce.

Waste Reduction Week in Canada was developed in 2001 by a coalition of 13 recycling councils and sister organizations and is delivered each October. The program’s goal is to inform Canadians about the environmental and social ramifications of wasteful practices.
