FREDERICTON (GNB) – The provincial government will issue a new Class 1 air quality approval for the Coleson Cove Thermal Generating Station.

The company's current approval expires on Jan. 14, 2015, with the new approval taking effect on Jan. 15, 2015. The approval follows a public consultation process that included a 120-day public review that ran from July 4 to Nov. 3, 2014.

The station is operated by NB Power and is the province’s largest electricity generating plant. Coleson Cove is located at Tiner Point, in the community of Lorneville, about 20 kilometres west of Saint John. The facility was initially commissioned in 1976 and generates up to 1050 megawatts of electricity from burning heavy fuel oil in two large boilers and a combination of heavy fuel oil and petroleum coke in a third large boiler. The station represents about 25 per cent of NB Power’s total generating capacity.

The information, along with approval conditions, can be viewed on the Department of Environment and Local Government website or at any regional office of the department.

Class 1 major industries are required to comply with the Air Quality Regulation under the Clean Air Act, and to operate under the terms and conditions established in the approval to operate.
