CAMPBELLTON (GNB) – The provincial government is supporting environmental groups in the Restigouche region by contributing $193,500 from the Environmental Trust Fund to six projects.

“Our government committed to ensuring that the fund is used for grassroots environmental projects,” said Energy and Mines Minister Donald Arseneault. “I am pleased that the fund could provide support to these excellent projects which will protect, preserve and enhance the province's natural environment, making life better for New Brunswick families.”

Arseneault spoke on behalf of Environment and Local Government Minister Brian Kenny.

The following projects received funding:

  • the Village of Pointe-Verte will evaluate the impact of climate change on its existing infrastructure system ($45,000);
  • the Association des bassins versants de la baie des Chaleurs will carry out an environmental inventory and restoration work in the Jacquet and Nigadoo River watersheds ($45,000);
  • the Five Fingers Brook Watershed Committee in Saint-Quentin will carry out activities to improve water quality in its watershed ($16, 500);
  • the Association francophone des municipalités du Nouveau-Brunswick will begin the Partners in Climate Protection program ($35,000);
  • Regional Service Commission 2 will undertake an education campaign to increase participation in its recycling programs ($40,000); and
  • the Village of Eel River Crossing will expand its watershed clean-up activities to protect its drinking water supply ($12,000).

The fund provides assistance to community groups, organizations, municipalities and institutions for projects that produce tangible, measurable benefits to the environment.

A total of 232 projects valued at $6.2 million have been approved for funding under the Environmental Trust Fund in the following priority action areas:

  • protecting our environment;
  • increasing environmental awareness;
  • managing our waste;
  • addressing climate change; and
  • building sustainable communities.
