FREDERICTON (GNB) – New Brunswick was successful in achieving national air quality objectives in 2014 according to the 2014 Air Quality Monitoring Results report released today.

“Good air quality makes New Brunswick a better place to live and raise a family,” said Environment and Local Government Minister Serge Rousselle. “Our government remains committed to monitoring air quality throughout the province and reporting findings to New Brunswickers.”

Report highlights include:

  • The province was successful in achieving the national air quality objectives during this reporting period.
  • The Canadian Ambient Air Quality Standard targets have been achieved provincewide.
  • There were no exceedances of provincial objectives for nitrogen dioxide or carbon monoxide at any of the provincial monitoring sites.
  • Acid rain levels remain very low, following a sharp decline in recent years.

The 2014 report includes information from 13 provincial air quality monitoring stations and 10 acid rain stations. During this reporting period, industry operated an additional 30 stations. The key pollutants monitored include carbon monoxide, sulphur dioxide, hydrogen sulphide, nitrogen dioxide, ground level ozone, particulate matter, total reduced sulphur, and volatile organic compounds.

Last year, the provincial government launched an Air Quality Data Portal, providing immediate access to air quality monitoring data. The portal is also available on the department’s website.
