FREDERICTON (GNB) – The provincial government is providing $1,225,000 in financial loans to nine projects in local service districts.

“Our government is pleased to provide access to the capital funding needed to enhance the ability of local service districts to respond to emergency situations and improve services in their communities,” said Environment and Local Government Minister Serge Rousselle. “These loans will contribute to our government’s goals of job creation, economic growth, and making New Brunswick the best place to raise a family.”

The projects approved under the Capital Budget for 2017-18 are:

• Hampton-Nauwigewauk, $175,000 for the completion of a new fire hall;

• Waterborough, $175,000 for continued construction of a new fire hall;

• Saint-Joseph, $250,000 to begin construction of a new fire hall;

• Douglas, $145,000 for a three-bay expansion of the fire hall;

• Renous/Quarryville, $150,000 for renovations to the existing fire hall;

• Elgin, $150,000 for the construction of an additional bay to the existing fire hall;

• Cocagne, $120,000 to update the radio communication system to be compatible with other fire departments;

• Notre-Dame-des-Érables, $30,000 to repair the outdoor skating rink; and

• Île Miscou, $30,000 for paving the fire hall driveway.

“Local service districts have submitted projects for funding based on the advice of their local advisory committees and fire chiefs,” said Rousselle. “Through the Small Capital Loans Program, our government is helping them advance their priorities and get things done.”

Loans to fund these projects are issued through the program and will be repaid, with interest, through property tax recoveries. The Department of Environment and Local Government administers fire services in local service districts and facilitates the tendering and purchasing process.
