FREDERICTON (GNB) – The following message was issued today by Environment and Local Government Minister Serge Rousselle in recognition of Earth Day, Saturday, April 22:

New Brunswick is proud to be part of the international community recognizing Earth Day 2017. This year marks Earth Day Canada’s 25th anniversary. The organization will use this milestone to focus efforts on its newest initiative, EarthPLAY for Earth Day 2017: Connect to your nature! At a time when most children spend less than an hour per day outside, this year’s campaign is dedicated to outdoor play.

Your government is committed to protecting the environment and ensuring a greener future for New Brunswick’s children. That includes ensuring environmental education and access to public parks and natural spaces for exploration. Being part of the largest environmental event in the world is an example of New Brunswick’s commitment to do our part to protect the planet. More than one billion people in 192 countries participate in Earth Day activities, and we are proud that New Brunswickers from all corners of the province embrace this worldwide celebration.

Your government understands that New Brunswickers value protecting the environment. That is why the government is investing in initiatives to increase environmental awareness, manage our waste, and build sustainable communities. That is also why the government has developed a new strengthened response to addressing climate change through the recent climate change action plan, Transitioning to a Low-Carbon Economy.

I encourage New Brunswickers to consider ways they can participate in the various Earth Day activities that are happening throughout the province.

We can celebrate the environment every day of the year by adopting greener habits that help to protect and promote our air, land and water resources for current and future generations.
