FREDERICTON (GNB) – The province will receive nearly $51 million through the federal government’s Low Carbon Economy Leadership Fund for programs aimed at helping people save money and energy, while supporting the province’s climate change objectives.

The funding is a component of the Low Carbon Economy Fund, which is intended to spur clean growth and cut carbon pollution while promoting innovative solutions to climate change. The provincial and federal governments and NB Power are combining to invest up to $234 million in energy efficiency programs over the next five years.

“We owe it to future generations, our children and grandchildren, to prevent the worst impacts of climate change from occurring,” said Environment and Local Government Minister Serge Rousselle. “Our climate change plan calls for investments in energy efficiency, which will reduce greenhouse gas emissions, create jobs and save money.”

The Low Carbon Economy Fund will help meet Canada’s commitment under the Paris Agreement and achieve its national climate target for 2030. New Brunswick is eligible for the funding as a signatory to the Pan-Canadian Framework on Clean Growth and Climate Change.

The announcement at Grimross Brewing in Fredericton demonstrates the types of projects that the Low Carbon Economy Leadership Fund will support by helping households, businesses and industries reduce costs through energy efficiency programming.

“Investing in energy efficiency is a common-sense solution to climate change and a way to support our local economy,” said federal Health Minister Ginette Petitpas Taylor. “Through this funding, we are proud to help more New Brunswickers save energy and money at home, while creating hundreds of local jobs and new economic opportunities.”

The provincial government estimates projects supported by the Low Carbon Economy Leadership Fund will create more than 400 jobs.
