FREDERICTON (GNB) – The Department of Environment and Local Government has selected Dillon Consulting to conduct a comprehensive review of the province’s solid-waste management service model, which has been in operation for 30 years.

Three engineering firms bid in August on the terms of reference for the review.

“Reducing waste through recycling and other programs is our goal,” said Environment and Local Government Minister Jeff Carr. “It is important to determine what is working well and what could be improved in our current service model so that we can better adapt to future solid-waste management programs and strategies.”

There are 12 Regional Service Commissions that oversee the delivery of the service model through the operation of six sanitary landfills and other waste management initiatives.

The review, which received $125,000 in funding from the Environmental Trust Fund, is expected to take about six months.
