MIRAMICHI (CNB) – The provincial government is providing funding for an economic development officer to seek development opportunities at the Miramichi Airport, and it has also signed a long-term lease with the Miramichi Airport Commission. The total value of these investments is up to $3 million over the next 12 years.

Miramichi-Bay du Vin MLA Bill Fraser made the announcement on behalf of Business New Brunswick Minister Victor Boudreau, who is also minister responsible for the Regional Development Corporation, and Natural Resources Minister Wally Stiles.

“These are important investments for our community,” said Fraser. “There is great potential for jobs to be created through the Miramichi Airport. We are giving the airport commission the tools and funding they need to achieve that potential.”

Through the Regional Development Corporation, the provincial government is providing funding of up to $450,000 over three years to offset the costs of an economic development officer. The province will invest $125,000 in the first year with the possibility of renewed funding in the following two years.

Through the Department of Natural Resources, the province has signed a lease through to 2021 valued at about $2.6 million to house staff of Forest Protection Ltd. and air operations staff from the Department of Natural Resources.
