MONCTON (CNB) – The provincial government has set up a website that contains factual information about the potential of shale gas. Premier David Alward made the announcement today.

"I am pleased to announce the launch of an extensive program of consultation geared at providing answers to the questions New Brunswickers have about a more robust natural gas industry," said Alward.

The premier was referring to the establishment of an online forum, called Natural Gas From Shale, where New Brunswickers can obtain factual information about fracking; its environmental impact; and the potential economic benefits associated with shale gas development.

Natural Resources Minister Bruce Northrup will be spearheading the consultations and will be assisted by experts from various departments.

"Recently, there have been many questions concerning the potential of shale gas development," Northrup said. "We have heard the concerns, which is why our government launched an open dialogue on the subject of shale gas and what it could mean to our province. I encourage everyone to visit the new website and learn about natural gas exploration and participate in the dialogue."

The premier spoke about New Brunswick's economy and how shale gas could benefit the province as well as those communities that would share in any benefits from this industry.

He acknowledged concerns that New Brunswickers have with the processes associated with the natural gas industry. He said New Brunswick would only move forward with shale gas development if it is environmentally safe.

"If this industry proceeds, New Brunswick will have among the toughest regulations governing exploration and development on this continent," Alward said.

The provincial government made a commitment in 2010 to examine all potential energy opportunities, including natural gas development, in a responsible way.
