FREDERICTON (GNB) – The results of the 2013 moose licence draw are now available, Natural Resources Minister Bruce Northrup said today.

There were 66,319 applications for 4,612 licences available for New Brunswick residents. The number of available moose licences for residents has increased by more than 1,000 since 2010.

"This increase was accomplished by adding licences in wildlife management zones where the moose population has increased and also where we have seen a high number of moose/vehicle collisions," said Northrup. "Our goal has been to reduce accidents while providing more opportunities for moose hunters. This increase will not reduce the current population in those zones but will control the rate at which the moose population is growing."

 Hunters who entered the draw may find out if they were successful either by calling 1-800-459-3729 on a touchtone telephone or by checking online at the Department of Natural Resources website.

Callers will be asked to enter their New Brunswick Medicare number using the telephone keypad. Those checking online must enter their New Brunswick Medicare number into the required field on the website. Applicants will then be informed if they were successful in the draw.

Letters will be sent to all successful applicants. To purchase their moose licence, hunters must bring a valid New Brunswick Medicare card to a Service New Brunswick centre on or after Aug. 19.

This year's draw used a new pool system introduced to fulfil a commitment in the document, Putting New Brunswick First. It improved the odds in the moose draw for hunters who have not had their names drawn for more than 10 years.

The 2013 moose hunting season runs from Thursday, Sept. 26, to Saturday, Sept. 28.
