FREDERICTON (GNB) – As rivers and lakes begin to open, anglers are getting ready for the season ahead.

Fishing season opens today on many rivers and brooks in the province with lakes and additional rivers opening May 1. Northern lakes will open May 15.

As people begin to head out on the water, the Department of Natural Resources is reminding anglers to report their catch online or by using the postage paid survey card provided in the middle of the Fish 2014 book.

The department relies on information provided by anglers to help manage the province's recreational fishing resources. The survey includes questions about where and how often anglers fished as well as the number and species of fish they caught and kept.

Anglers who provide their information are entered in a prize draw. The 2013 winners include Clayton Brown - who won a Sage flight fly rod and reel package donated by the Atlantic Salmon Federation and the NB Salmon Council - and James Cobbett who won an Abu Garcia spinning rod and reel package. An additional 15 anglers won a free fishing license for 2014.

In regards to the Fish 2014 book, some errors were noted in the printed copy. A single page insert should have been provided with the book explaining the errors.  If you did not receive the notice you can contact the department at 506-453-3826 or access it online.
