FREDERICTON (GNB) – The provincial government has released a document entitled Exploring Natural Gas in New Brunswick to help New Brunswickers better understand the exploration and development of natural gas.

The document aims to give an overview of operations, answer frequently asked questions and correct myths surrounding natural gas exploration and development. It was produced by the Department of Energy and Mines with the help of the departments of Environment and Local Government, Transportation and Infrastructure, and Public Safety as well as WorkSafeNB and the Energy and Utilities Board.

“Our government is proud to be releasing this new document as part of our ongoing commitment to provide relevant and up-to-date information on energy issues affecting the province,” said Energy and Mines Minister Craig Leonard. “In our consultations and meetings with New Brunswickers, we have been hearing that people have questions about the natural gas industry. It is with those people in mind that we have created this document. Our government recognizes the importance of providing the latest scientific information, facts and figures to the public so that they can make informed decisions for themselves.”

The 21-page document – backed by scientific studies and publications – explains how natural gas is created, lists the various steps needed to explore and develop natural gas and gives an overview of the rules and regulations in place to protect human and environmental health.

“Over the last few years, our government has been working tirelessly to set the stage for an expanded natural gas industry,” said Leonard. “We have done the research, we have put in place strong policies and stringent rules, and we have operated in a clear and transparent manner. This document is simply another way in which we are reaching out to New Brunswickers to raise awareness of this opportunity for our province.”

Exploring Natural Gas in New Brunswick is available on the Department of Energy and Mines’ website, as well as in printed format by request.
