FREDERICTON (GNB) – Anglers are reminded that the recreational fishing season begins today in New Brunswick. Lakes will open May 1 in the southern recreational fishery areas and May 15 in the northern areas.

Anglers are also reminded that obtaining fishing licenses is much easier, with the recent launch of the new e-licensing system.

The federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans has announced new conservation measures for Atlantic salmon this year: there is no retention of grilse in the province and anglers may only use a single barbless hook in waters where it is already mandatory to use an artificial fly. New measures have also been put in place for the striped bass recreational fishery. Further detail can be found on the Department of Fisheries and Ocean’s website.

Every five years a national survey on recreational fishing is carried out to assess angling activity and to report on the economic and social importance of recreational fishing in Canada. The Department of Natural Resources is encouraging anglers to fill out the national survey online or complete the postage-paid survey card provided in the middle of the Fish 2015 book. Data obtained by the department helps in the sound management of the province's recreational fisheries resources. Survey questions include angler effort and catch information.

New Brunswick anglers who take a few minutes to complete the on-line survey at the end of the 2015 fishing season are eligible to win prizes of fishing rod packages or a 2016 New Brunswick fishing licence.

This year anglers in New Brunswick have access to a convenient, web-based e-licensing system. The system will be available for anglers and for applications to the resident moose draw this spring. All hunting and trapping licenses and other draws will move to the e-licensing system in 2016.

All licenses can still be obtained through the traditional methods at Service New Brunswick Centres and through private vendors.
