ATHOLVILLE (GNB) – An Opportunities Summit for the forestry sector was hosted by Premier Brian Gallant today in Atholville.

“The forestry sector has provided work to thousands of New Brunswickers for centuries,” said Gallant. “We must develop our natural resources responsibly so that this industry continues to employ New Brunswickers for many years to come.”

The sector is one of the province’s largest employers, responsible for about 11,000 direct and 9,000 indirect jobs. It contributes $1.6 billion to the province’s GDP annually.

“As we continue to work towards a new forestry plan for the province, opportunities like this summit allow us to hear directly from those who are closest to the industry and understand it best,” said Natural Resources Minister Denis Landry. “This summit provided a chance to discuss fostering growth and to identify opportunities in the sector.”

Opportunities Summits are taking place around the province to identify new prospects for creating jobs and economic growth. The opportunities identified will be reviewed and evaluated for development as part of an economic action plan for the province.
