FREDERICTON (GNB) – People are encouraged to learn more about the province’s forestry heritage during National Forest Week, Sept. 18-24.

"New Brunswickers have a close connection to the forest,” said Energy and Resource Development Minister Rick Doucet. “The forest is a place to work, hunt, fish and enjoy nature, but it also provides a habitat for a variety of species, plays an important role in providing clean drinking water and helps absorb carbon from our atmosphere. It is vital to keep the forest healthy so it can continue to function as a buffer against the forces of climate change.”

The theme of this year’s National Forest Week is True North, Strong and Green. More than 22,000 New Brunswickers work in the forestry industry, from growing, tending and protecting the forest to harvesting wood and processing trees into valuable wood-based products. The forest also supports jobs in guiding, outfitting, the harvesting of non-traditional forest products and research.

“The New Brunswick economy depends upon the responsible, sustainable management of our forests,” said Doucet.

The forest has been a source of industry for the province for well over a century. Today, technology and innovation are used to ensure the best possible return on the resource. From satellite imagery to airborne LiDAR data, technology supports sustainable practices in today’s forest.

“I urge all New Brunswickers to celebrate the important role the forest plays in our economic, environmental and social well-being during National Forest Week,” said Doucet.
