FREDERICTON (GNB) – With hunting and furbearer trapping season well underway throughout the fall and winter months in New Brunswick, the Department Energy and Resource Development is advising pet owners to take precautions to keep their pets from being accidentally injured or killed in a hunting or trapping accident.

The department reminds pet owners of the following:

  • Under the Fish and Wildlife Act, it is illegal for dogs to run at large in a wildlife area.
  • To minimize harassment of wildlife, pets should be kept under control or leashed at all times.
  • It is illegal to disturb any legally placed trap or snare.

Hunters and trappers are reminded of the distance restrictions near dwellings, schools, playgrounds, athletic fields, solid waste disposal sites and places of business. It is illegal for hunters to discharge a rifle within 400 metres, or a shotgun within 200 metres, and for trappers to set traps and/or snares within 300 metres of those areas.
