FREDERICTON (GNB) – The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty is being celebrated today in New Brunswick and around the world, with the theme Moving from humiliation and exclusion to participation: Ending poverty in all its forms.

The New Brunswick Economic and Social Inclusion Corporation and the 12 Community Inclusion Networks throughout the province invite New Brunswickers to join in solidarity with those living in poverty and work together to improve their quality of life.

“The theme this year highlights how important it is to recognize and address the humiliation and exclusion endured by many people living in poverty”, said Service New Brunswick Minister Ed Doherty, who is also minister responsible for Poverty Reduction and the Economic and Social Inclusion Corporation. “Poverty is both a cause and consequence of marginalization and social exclusion. In order to leave no one behind, we must address the humiliation and exclusion of people living in poverty.”

Overcoming Poverty Together: The New Brunswick Economic and Social Inclusion Plan brings together government, business, community and individuals to be a part of a social project aimed at meeting the basic needs of New Brunswickers so they can live in dignity, safety and good health. It operates under the conviction that all New Brunswickers should have the same opportunities in terms of employment, personal development and community involvement.

The corporation acknowledges the hundreds of non-profit organizations and their volunteers who play a critical role in poverty reduction through their community involvement.

The Economic and Social Inclusion Corporation is a Crown corporation that co-ordinates and supports implementation of the Overcoming Poverty Together plan. The corporation’s board of directors consists of members representing people who experienced or are living in poverty, non-profit organizations, the business sector and the government.
