SAINT JOHN (GNB) – Service New Brunswick Minister Ed Doherty, who is minister responsible for Poverty Reduction and the Economic and Social Inclusion Corporation, hosted a summit on reducing poverty as part of the development of the New Brunswick Family Plan on Monday, Feb. 27, in Saint John.

Doherty discussed with stakeholders ways to facilitate access to programs and services to improve the quality of life of New Brunswickers.

“Communication, networking, promotion and training are all important tools to help inform individuals and families trying to improve their quality of life,” said Doherty. “Your government is listening and getting things done by working with stakeholders in an effort to facilitate access to the many programs and services that already exist in communities.”

Discussions focused mainly on what is needed to improve access to government and non-profit programs and services. The ideas that came out will help the corporation, the government and community organizations in the design of a comprehensive system that will help connect New Brunswickers with their services and programs.

The recently-launched New Brunswick Family Plan Framework is intended to complement the Economic Growth Plan and 10-year education plans and aims to ensure that families are supported, resulting in a healthier province. The framework includes a stakeholder engagement process.

Summits will be held throughout the province to assist in the development of the New Brunswick Family Plan.

The New Brunswick Family Plan Framework focuses government action in seven priority areas: improving access to primary and acute care; promoting wellness; supporting people with mental health challenges; fostering healthy aging and support for seniors; advancing women’s equality; reducing poverty; and supporting people with disabilities.
