MONCTON (GNB) – An income tax preparation clinic was held at the Université de Moncton as part of a joint initiative between the provincial and federal governments.

“The Get Your Piece of the Money Pie program is a great initiative that helps provide New Brunswickers on a modest income an opportunity to prepare and file their income tax, which could help qualified individuals and families improve their financial status,” said Service New Brunswick Minister Ed Doherty, who is also minister responsible for Poverty Reduction and the Economic and Social Inclusion Corporation. “Through this innovative and collaborative partnership, we are getting things done by helping people realize the potential benefits available to them.”

Doherty also thanked the volunteers and host organizations for the important role they play in putting on these clinics.

Edgar Léger, who has volunteered at the Université de Moncton income tax clinic for 46 years, was honoured for helping residents file their taxes for free. He began volunteering while he was a business administration professor and continued long after retirement.

Through the program, local organizations host tax clinics and arrange for volunteers to help eligible people prepare and file their income tax and benefit returns. The program is a joint effort among the Economic and Social Inclusion Corporation, the Canada Revenue Agency, Service Canada, the Department of Social Development and the New Brunswick Public Library Service. This year, more than 150 clinics are taking place in 40 New Brunswick communities during income tax season. Some clinics continue throughout the year.

Since its launch in 2010, the Get Your Piece of the Money Pie program has expanded, and, this year, features so-called “super clinics” which are among the first of their kind in Canada.

“These tax preparation clinics are a result of ongoing federal-provincial partnerships, and offer a wide range of services to Canadians,” said Kamal Khera, parliamentary secretary for the minister of national revenue. “Through these clinics, and thanks to this partnership, individuals and families with modest incomes and simple tax situations can not only get help filing their income tax and benefit returns, but can also obtain social insurance numbers for their children, and sign them up for the Canada Learning Bond, all in one spot.”

The super clinics also provide information on other provincial and federal programs and benefits.

Participants must take their tax information slips and receipts to the clinics. Parents must provide their child’s birth certificate to obtain a social insurance number to register for the Canada Learning Bond.
