FREDERICTON (GNB) – The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty is being observed in New Brunswick and around the world today. This year’s theme is Answering the Call of October 17 to end poverty: A path toward peaceful and inclusive societies. It was chosen by the United Nations, in consultation with civil society organizations and people living in poverty, to recognize that all people must come together to end poverty and discrimination in order to build a sustainable future.
“Poverty is a social issue and affects communities far and wide with impacts on single people, families and seniors,” said Tourism, Heritage and Culture Minister John Ames, who is also the minister responsible for poverty reduction and the Economic and Social Inclusion Corporation. “Oct. 17 presents an opportunity for all of us to reflect on how we can work together to help lift people out of poverty.”
This year marks the 25th anniversary of the United Nations’ adoption of a resolution declaring the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty.
Overcoming Poverty Together: The New Brunswick Economic and Social Inclusion Plan brings together government, business, community and individuals to be a part of a social project aimed at meeting the basic needs of New Brunswickers so they can live in dignity, safety and good health. The Economic and Social Inclusion Corporation and the 12 Community Inclusion Networks throughout the province are responsible for the implementation and co-ordination of the plan. The corporation acknowledges the hundreds of non-profit organizations and their volunteers who play a role in poverty reduction through their community involvement.
Throughout October, the corporation-led awareness campaign, Small Acts, Big Impact, challenges New Brunswickers to choose a small but meaningful act of volunteerism to help overcome poverty in the province. While some large challenges may seem overwhelming, this campaign demonstrates how small, powerful actions can make a collective impact. It aims to inspire more people to help reduce poverty while also teaching them about the daily challenges faced by people living in poverty.
While the campaign takes place throughout the month, the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty will also be celebrated as Small Acts Day in New Brunswick. Individuals and organizations are encouraged to take photos of their acts and share them on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram or the campaign website.
