FREDERICTON (GNB) – The New Brunswick Economic and Social Inclusion Corporation and the province's 12 community inclusion networks are reminding people of the importance of marking the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty on Sunday, Oct. 17.
In recognition of this day, which was declared by the United Nations, the corporation is urging New Brunswickers to show solidarity with people living in poverty.
“We are committed and determined to reduce poverty in New Brunswick,” said Social Development Minister Bruce Fitch, who is also minister responsible for the Economic and Social Inclusion Corporation. “Our goal is to strengthen our communities by improving the quality of life of those who are living in poverty. On this important day, I encourage all New Brunswickers to continue to take action to overcome poverty in our communities.”
The day is being marked as the community inclusion networks begin public consultations across the province. These consultations, which will continue throughout the fall, are intended is to gather relevant information from stakeholders and community members to enable the networks to build regional plans that will adequately address the needs of their communities. Those interested in participating are invited to contact their community inclusion network.
These regional plans will be directly aligned with the Provincial Economic and Social Inclusion Plan to maximize the impact of poverty reduction efforts. In March 2020, the third version of this plan was unveiled as Overcoming Poverty Together 3. It is based on the belief that all New Brunswickers should have the opportunities, resources and security they need to thrive and actively participate in community life.
The Economic and Social Inclusion Corporation is a Crown corporation that co-ordinates and implements the Overcoming Poverty Together strategy. Its board of directors is comprised of 17 members representing government, business, community non-profit organizations and people who have experienced poverty.
