FREDERICTON (GNB) – Changes to the cabinet committee structure will shift power from unelected advisors to cabinet ministers and allow for an increased focus on government priorities, Premier Brian Gallant announced today.

There will be five cabinet committees, a similar number to most other provinces. They are:

• Jobs Board, chaired by Gallant;

• Priorities Board, chaired by Gallant;

• Policy Board, chaired by Cathy Rogers, minister of Social Development and minister of Healthy and Inclusive Communities;

• Board of Management, chaired by Roger Melanson, minister of Finance and minister of Transportation and Infrastructure;

• Legislative Instruments and Regulations Board, chaired by Bill Fraser, minister of Tourism, Heritage and Culture.

‎"Our government is focused on job creation, balancing our finances and making life more affordable for families," Gallant said. "By creating deliberative decision-making bodies, we will have clear direction coming from elected officials who are focused on our shared priorities."

The Jobs Board will set economic policy and job creation targets and ensure the economic performance of government.

The Priorities Board will provide direction on policy issues that relate to official government commitments, as well as review and approve corporate and departmental annual plans and the legislative agenda for each sitting.

The Policy Board will provide analysis of significant new policies not reviewed by the Priorities Board.

The Legislative Instruments and Regulations Board will review and provide recommendations to cabinet on order-in-council and draft regulations.

“This more robust cabinet committee structure will break down silos between departments, allowing ministers to better collaborate on policy,” Gallant said. “It means that the people New Brunswickers elected to govern their province will have greater control and accountability over delivering on our commitments.”
