FREDERICTON (GNB) – Prince Edward Island has joined the Joint Office of Regulatory and Service Effectiveness established earlier this year by New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.

This initiative, a partnership that is built on promoting a modern, consistent and fair regulatory environment in the provinces, will achieve an unprecedented level of co-operation among the Maritime provinces.

Prince Edward Island committed to join following the last meeting of the Council of Atlantic Premiers in Charlottetown. 

“We welcome Prince Edward Island to this initiative,” said Premier Brian Gallant. “Many New Brunswick companies do business in our neighbouring provinces and contribute to the region’s economy. By reducing and better aligning regulations in the three provinces, we will help create the conditions for economic growth and job creation.”

The office has a three-year mandate to substantially reduce impediments to business growth and build a more positive business environment in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island.

It is responsible for promoting:

• a fair, efficient, effective, predictable and transparent regulatory regime that is rigorous and meets the expectations of citizens for protection;

• far less overlap and unnecessary regulations and costs for business;

• effective and efficient service delivery that capitalizes on technology;

• streamlined inspections and compliance oversight; and

• enhanced co-operation and harmonization.

The office will work towards identifying a number of other areas for co-operation among the three provinces such as health care, labour mobility and energy.
