FREDERICTON (GNB) – The following statement was issued today by Treasury Board President Roger Melanson, who is also minister responsible for trade policy, on the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership:
The provincial government is pleased with the announcement that the federal government and 10 other nations in the Asia-Pacific region have concluded discussions on the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), formerly referred to as the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP).
Our government fully supports the federal government’s commitment to strengthening its economic relationship with its CPTPP partners: Japan, Singapore, Vietnam, Australia, New Zealand, Brunei, Malaysia, Mexico, Chile, and Peru. If ratified, the agreement would have direct benefits for New Brunswick as it would substantially lower or eliminate tariffs on a wide range of goods, including forestry and value-added wood products as well as fish and seafood products. Anytime we remove trade barriers it is good for us as we are the most export-oriented province, but we will ensure that if New Brunswick industries have any concerns or suggestions they are heard as the federal government considers signature of the agreement.
