FREDERICTON (GNB) – Essential government services will remain in place over the holiday season, although public servants are encouraged to take a four-day leave during the slower period between Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.

This is the seventh consecutive year employees are encouraged to take part in the Holiday Leave Initiative, which traditionally sees lower demand for government services. All vital programs and services such as health, safety and security of the public, will continue to be in place during this period.

Most government services will operate with reduced staff between Dec. 23 and Jan. 2, inclusive, in order to achieve savings for government. Employees have been encouraged to use vacation credits or leave without pay which can be pro-rated over 26 pay periods. The initiative is voluntary.

The public is encouraged to call first before visiting government services or departments between Dec. 23 and Jan. 2.
