MCADAM (CNB) - The names of the 10 latest recipients of the Order of New Brunswick, the highest distinction awarded by the province, were announced today by Premier Shawn Graham.

The premier revealed the recipients' names for 2009 during the official New Brunswick Day celebration held in McAdam.

"New Brunswick Day is the perfect opportunity to celebrate the contributions of a few special individuals who have made our province a better place in which to live," said Graham.

The recipients are:

  • Frederick Beairsto, Fredericton;
  • Claudette Bradshaw, Bas de Cocagne;
  • Elphège Chiasson, Lamèque;
  • Thomas Condon, Saint John;
  • Flora MacDonald Dell, Moncton;
  • Shirley Downey, St. Stephen;
  • Bertrand Johnson, Dieppe;
  • Clare Whelton McCain, Florenceville;
  • John McLaughlin, Fredericton; and
  • Wendy Nielsen, Cambridge Narrows.

"The efforts of these individuals say something about the nature of all New Brunswickers past and present," said Graham. "To me, their efforts are concrete examples of the optimism, perseverance, and determination that characterize us as a people. These qualities have built the New Brunswick of today."

The appointees will receive the Order of New Brunswick at Government House in Fredericton in the fall. These appointments will bring the membership of the order to 78.

The Order of New Brunswick was established in 2000 to recognize New Brunswickers who have demonstrated excellence and achievement; and who have made an outstanding contribution to the social, cultural, or economic well-being of the province. The first investiture was held in 2002. Biographies of the recipients may be viewed at the Order of New Brunswick website.
