EDMUNDSTON (GNB) – The 2014 World Acadian Congress will kick-off in 100 days and Premier David Alward is inviting all New Brunswickers to join in the celebrations.
With Acadia of the World: A New Acadia! as its theme, the World Acadian Congress will be held in northwestern New Brunswick, northern Maine, and the Témiscouata region of Quebec from August 8-24.
"During the 100 days leading up to the World Acadian Congress, I invite all New Brunswickers to get in the mood to celebrate," said Alward. "Our government is proud to contribute to the success of the 2014 World Acadian Congress. This huge get-together is a unique opportunity to strengthen ties between two nations and three territories."
This fifth congress will feature a number of exhibition areas, seminars, conferences, grand gatherings, theme days and an economic component to ensure that the 2014 event leaves a lasting legacy in the region.
"Acadia is a social, economic, and cultural strength for New Brunswick and Canada as a whole," said Alward. "It is a source of inspiration, pride, and diversity. For 20 years, the World Acadian Congress has been a unifying force that has enabled Acadians to promote their strength."
The 2014 event is focused on cultural communities with more than 120 family reunions and 200 community activities as well as 50 heritage and outdoor projects spread across the entire area.
"The 2014 World Acadian Congress will stimulate the tourist industry, create opportunities for economic growth, and contribute to greater prosperity in northwestern New Brunswick and throughout the province."
The four previous world Acadian congresses generated major economic spinoffs for the host regions. The previous congress, held on the Acadian Peninsula in 2009, generated an estimated $22 million in spinoffs and the event brought the region international visibility as a tourist destination.
